Ice Cream & Copywriting: a recap of the Commpose November meetup
Commpose came back with a bang this week with our November meetup, Ice Cream & Copywriting. We met at Mojo Yogurt for sweet confections and conversation. The first part of the meetup was spent meeting everyone and chatting. Then, we did an exercise that was a mix between speed dating and roundtable discussions. We broke up into four groups and discussed a thought-provoking question about copywriting. After a few minutes of getting to know each other, chatting about the question, and sharing advice, we rotated to the next table to lather, rinse, and repeat. It was a great way to meet everyone at the event and chat about relevant topics without too much structure. Here are some of the questions we discussed (or good questions to talk about with your copywriter friends if you weren’t able to make it):
- How do you go about getting feedback on your work with peers and clients?
- What project management and content sharing systems do you use? Which ones do you recommend/not recommend?
- What conferences, books, blogs, or other resources have helped you with copywriting?
- How do you push past writer’s block?
- What company’s or person’s writing style do you admire?
- What are some of your favorite and least favorite words?
- How do you approach working with designers? Have you found that it works better to collaborate or provide copy based on guidelines they give you?
- How do you determine what makes you different as a copywriter?
- How do you gain support for content/copywriting and convince people it’s important?
- What are the steps of your copywriting process? How do you get the information you need to write effectively for your clients?
It was especially interesting to hear everyone’s responses to these questions because there were people from several disciplines and work environments, from agency copywriters and designers, to lawyers and nonprofit fundraisers. Everyone seemed to really enjoy hearing all the different perspectives and advice.
Thanks to all who came out to Mojo! Going forward, we’ll be doing a mix of more formal presentations (where someone will speak to us about a specific topic) and casual meetups (where we can just chat and share tips). Our next event will be sometime in January or February, so keep an eye on this site and our Facebook page for all the details. In the meantime, we’d love to hear your ideas for topics you’d like to learn more about. Post your ideas in our Facebook group, or leave a comment on this post.
See you next year!

Hey Shaina:
Thanks for keeping the Commpose flame alive. Sorry I missed this session.
Hope to see everyone at future Commpose meetups.
BTW: For writers hoping to hook up with corporate, non-profit, agency or freelance communicators, think about attending IABC’s annual Network Night on Dec. 1.
There’ll be drinks, hors d’oeuvre, live music from the Siroccan Winds, plus a silent auction — plus communicators from many of the local companies and agencies. To register: http://bit.ly/nmyj3C. or go to http://www.iabcphoenix.com
Thanks.

Thanks for sharing, Bart! Looks like a great event for everyone to check out.
